Leza Wainwright Announces Retirement

MH/DD/SAS Division Director Leza Wainwright Announces Retirement - Tuesday, May 11

Dear Friends,

It is with decidedly mixed emotions that I am announcing my retirement from state government service effective September 1, 2010.  I have been considering this move for some time and believe that now is the right time for me and my family.

I have assured Secretary Cansler and Assistant Secretary Mike Watson that I stand willing to assist with the transition to a new Division Director in any way possible.  Despite the challenges posed by the current economic conditions, I truly believe that under Governor Perdue's and Secretary Cansler's leadership we have been taking the appropriate actions to stabilize the system and to improve the quality of services delivered.  It has been my honor to be a part of those efforts.

I did not dream when I was hired as an accounting clerk at Dorothea Dix Hospital thirty-two years ago that I would one day have the privilege of leading the Division.  I have been extremely fortunate to work with some of the most committed and caring people in state government.  I am very proud of all of you.  Although our working relationship will change in a few months, please know that the respect and affection that I have for you will not change.  I am truly grateful for the support that you have shown me.  I know that you will demonstrate the same level of dedication to the new leadership.

I'm not leaving tomorrow - I'm still here for three and a half months!  I am sure we will continue to accomplish a lot during that time.

April 2010 Disability Employment Statistics Released

In April 2010, the percentage of people with disabilities in the labor force was 22.2. This translates into 20,693,000 who are included in the civilian noninstitutional population (16 years and older) but not in the labor force. By comparison, the percentage of persons with no disability in the labor force is 70.2.

The unemployment rate for those with disabilities was 15.2 percent, compared with 9.3 percent for persons with no disability, not seasonally adjusted.
Web Tool Helps Employers Understand Disability Laws

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) today announced the availability of a new tool to help America's employers ensure their employment policies and practices do not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities.

The interactive, online Disability Nondiscrimination Law Advisor  helps employers quickly determine which federal disability nondiscrimination laws apply to their business or organization and their responsibilities under them.  To do this, it asks users to answer a few relevant questions and then generates a customized list of federal disability nondiscrimination laws that likely apply, along with easy-to-understand information about employers' responsibilities under each of them.

The Disability Nondiscrimination Advisor is one of a series of elaws (Employment Laws Assistance for Workers and Small Businesses) Advisors developed by DOL to help employers and employees understand federal employment laws.  To access it, visit the elaws Web site.  To learn more about DOL's efforts to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities, visit the Office of Disability Employment Policy Web site.
