NCARF Member Question

From Employment Source, Inc:

I would like to gather some information from the other CRP's who are members of NCARF who may be willing to give us  their thoughts about the future of their Center-Based Operations.  I believe we are all aware that it's challenging to ensure enough appropriate work that meets both programmatic & financial objectives of the program.

·         Do you still operate Centered Based Programming?
·         If so, how many individuals with disabilities do you currently support
          in center based programming?
·         What is the future of your center-based program? (ie. Are you
           downsizing, expanding, etc.)
·         What type of work does your centered -based program primarily do?

We are currently developing our strategic plan for FY 11 & are batting around questions with respect to options for training, placement & new work for those individual supported in our center-based program. Over the years, many of the in-house jobs we have had have proven to be feast or famine or have had business risks involved with end-of-life cycle disposal that limits long- term future growth. Most of our center-based  individuals are aging/approaching retirement & some only attend 3-4 days/week.  Any information you can share with us would be helpful.

Please email responses to BetsyTorsell at etorsell@ourpeoplework.org.

JCI Executive Director Vicki Shore Receives the Smithfield Selma-Chamber Athena Award

JCI's Executive Director, Vicki Shore, received the Smithfield-Selma Chamber Athena Award at the recent 40th Annual Meeting of the Chamber. Created to honor individuals who attain and personify the highest level of professional excellence, the Chamber Athena Award recognizes the achievements of women and celebrates the potential of all women as valued members and leaders of the community. Athena recipients must meet three criteria: 1) Demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business or profession; 2) Provide valuable service by devoting time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community; and 3) Assist women in reaching their full leadership potential. Through local Chambers of Commerce, the prestigious Athena Award is presented in more than 300 communities throughout the country. Corestaff Temporary Services sponsored the presentation.

Ms. Shore has been employed at JCI for more than thirty years. She has been instrumental in making a community not-for-profit agency a viable business through her dedication, leadership skills, and her commitment to enhancing the quality of life for persons with barriers to employment, as well as those in her community. Ms. Shore is a strong leader who has overseen JCI as it grew from a staff of 7 to 52. During her tenure, JCI
has assumed management of Harnett Production Enterprises in Lillington and Unity House in Selma. She has worked closely for numerous years with Johnston County officials to ensure that JCI fulfills its mission. Ms Shore was instrumental in establishing the JCI Endowment fund to further secure future funding needs for JCI. She completed the Duke Non-Profit Certificate Program, and has encouraged her staff to further develop their leadership and management skills.
